What is Hair Loss?

Hair loss affects everyone. Every few months, approximately 10% of the hair on a persons head falls out and new hair grows in its place. Excessive hair loss is when more than the normal amount of hair starts to fall out.

What Causes Excessive Hair Loss?

Hair loss may be caused by a large number of things. Often when someone is going through large changes in their life they may experience hair loss as a result of stress or hormonal changes. This can occur after an illness or major surgery. Hormonal changes such as having had a baby may also cause hair loss. Toxic medications may also cause hair loss as the body tries to restore health to the body. Medicines such as chemotherapy, birth control pills and anti-depressants commonly cause hair loss. Hair loss may also occur as a sign of disease such as diabetes.

Hair loss may also be a result of improper hair care. Hair perming, wearing tight pigtails or cornrows can also cause hair loss. Hair loss as a result of traction (pulling) is called alopecia.
