Moles are growths on the skin which are usually brownish or black in color. They can appear anywhere on the skin sometimes in groups. Most people develop moles up until their early twenties and can have between 10 and 45 which is considered normal. Moles will usually change over time sometimes growing, changing color or disappearing completely.
Moles can often be heriditary. Having said that, the formation of a mole is primarily due to the skin cells (called melanocytes) growing in a cluster, rather than being spread evenly throughout the skin.
Some scientists also suspect that exposure to ultraviolet radiation may also cause moles to grow.
Generally speaking, it is very difficult to diagnose a cancerous mole. The overwhelming majority of moles, however, are non-cancerous. Usually it is onlly a cause for concern if you are experiencing something unusual (e.g. bleeding, oozing, itching, growing or marked changes in a mole). Also if a mole changes color, height, size or shape you should have it checked by a dermatologist.
Moles are usually only removed if the are thought to be cancerous or if they are affecting a persons self-esteem. A minor surgical procedure is usually the only option to remove a mole, for skin tags they may also be frozen off or burnt off with electrical currents.
