Habits are extremely powerful thought patterns that cause people to do things repetitiously until the habit has been broken. The reason that habits are so powerful is that they have been repeated so many times that they become a thought pattern of the subconscious mind. This is similar to when someone says that something becomes '2nd nature'. It becomes solidified into the subconscious mind, where your mind becomes convinced that it is something that you must perform in order to survive. The subconscious mind is very 'stupid' but also incredibly powerful.
In order to become a master of your habits, you must teach your subconscious mind what it needs to know. First you may have to convince your subconscious that you no longer need to watch TV or you don't need to bite your nails. After this first stage of 'cognitive reprogramming, you must develop in your subconscious mind, habits which are desirable to you. This might mean going jogging everyday, saving money regularly or reading a book once per month. This is simple, but certainly not easy! Making a new habit usually takes around 60 to 90 days. Coincidentally it takes around the same amount of time to break a habit.
1. Make a solid decision to break your habit - you need to be aware of the bad habit and have a real desire to change it.
2. Write down your feelings when you do the habit. Also write down the circumstances and why you think you did it.
3. Read over your thoughts from when you 'commited' the bad habit.
4. Find a substitute habit - A good one! This helps make things much easier as you are building on a structure that is already there, but just changing the act.
5. Find support people - You can easily find like-minded people on the internet, in forums and chat rooms. Make them a part of what you are doing and let them help you change your habit.
6. Don't aim too high - It helps to stick to 2 - 3 habits at a time, or even just one. This gives you more focus and clarity and helps you act more effectively in the longer term.
A very effective program for defeating your habits once and for all is a program by a man called Dan Robey.
